Marie-Joëlle Zahar is Professor of Political Science and Director of the Research Network on Peace Operations at the Université de Montréal. A 2023-2026 fellow of the Pierre-Elliott Trudeau Foundation, she is also a member of the Roster of Senior Mediation Advisers at the United Nations where she served four terms on the UN Standby Team of Mediation Advisers and a term as Senior Expert in the Office of the UN Special Envoy for Syria. A non-resident Senior Fellow with the International Peace Academy, Professor Zahar is an expert on international peace and security, mediation, peace operations and post-conflict peacebuilding. Her most recent publications include “What Future for Peace Operations?” coauthored with Jennifer Welsh (Ethics and International Affairs, 2025), ‘Constitutional Reforms and Peace Processes: An odd couple?” (Constitutional Studies, 2025), and “Navigating a World without Leadership: Canada and its Allies in an Era of Turbulence and Geopolitical Rivalry,” coauthored with Pierre Martin (International Journal, 2024). Her current project, Global Conflicts, Local Wars, coedited with Theodore McLauchlin is forthcoming at Cornell University Press.
