Dr. Myles Sergeant is a family physician, the McMaster University Health Sciences Planetary Health Lead, and the Executive Director of the Canadian Coalition for Green Health Care (recognized by Health Care Without Harm as North America’s Health Care Climate Champion). For over 25 years, his clinical practice has focused on vulnerable populations, including service to the elderly and people experiencing homelessness. He co-founded the Shelter Health Network in 2005, a transformational initiative that led to him receiving the Order of Hamilton in 2023. Bridging frontline care with environmental advocacy, Dr. Sergeant co-founded PEACH Health Ontario in 2021 and created Trees for Hamilton in 2011, an initiative that has since scaled nationally into the Canadian Healthcare Forests Initiative. He founded the Canadian Sustainable Prescribing Network and the first Medicine Carbon Formulary in Canada. He also co-leads systemic partnerships, including the Climate Action Maturity Assessment with Accreditation Canada (which surveys all hospitals nationally) and the Sustainable Procurement Working Group with Supply Ontario. He spearheads institutional resource shifts through the National “Healthy Capital” Program and the Sustainable Food Services within Health Care Committee. A leader in institutional decarbonization, Dr. Sergeant drove the integration of sustainability into his hospital’s strategic plan in 2021—work advanced by a multidisciplinary team at Hamilton Health Sciences he serves on, which won the prestigious CCHL Energy and Environmental Stewardship Award in 2026. As an educator, he leads the medical school planetary health curriculum, guiding McMaster to the top spot in Canada on the 2026 global Planetary Health Report Card. An active researcher, his work is published in top-tier journals, including The BMJ and The Lancet Planetary Health, and he regularly delivers national keynote addresses. For his clinical and systemic impact, he was honored with the Environmental Health Award by the College of Family Physicians of Canada in 2025.
