Nkiko Michel is a recent graduate of the University of Victoria, where he majored in Political
Science with a minor in Environmental Studies. Originally from the Democratic Republic of
Congo, he lived as a refugee in Kenya before moving to Canada in early 2022, an experience
he describes as a second chance at a life of fulfilled dreams.
Nkiko is a Member and Convenor of The African Nexus (TAN), where he co-leads the writing
and publishing department, a research branch tracking emerging news and events across the
African continent. He has spoken as a panellist on several occasions on the role Canada must
play as a global leader, and is passionate about climate action, conflict resolution, food security,
and poverty alleviation. He believes Canada has an onus to be a more significant player on the
shores of sub-Saharan Africa, and that his generation carries the task of reimagining a global
system built for a world that no longer exists.
Nkiko is a recipient of the Debbie Luminaries Scholarship, awarded to outstanding newcomers
to Canada. He has worked with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees in Kenya
and aspires to serve within the federal government of Canada. Outside his academic and policy
work, he enjoys kayaking, soccer, hiking, swimming, and surfing.
