Rob Van Walleghem is currently the Vice President, Indigenous Affairs & General Counsel at the federal government’s Major Projects Office. Prior to joining the Major Projects Office, he
served as the Chief Legal and Indigenous Affairs Officer at Trans Mountain Corporation,
responsible for Legal Services and Indigenous Relations while also providing oversight of Public
Affairs and Governance matters. Rob has more than 35 years of legal experience, including
more than 20 years in the energy sector where he has worked closely with executive teams,
boards and senior regulators in Canada and the United States. Rob holds a Bachelor of Laws
from the University of Calgary and a Bachelor of Arts from the University of British Columbia. He
holds the designation of Certified In-House Counsel – Canada, as well as having obtained his
ICD.D, designation from the Institute of Corporate Directors. Rob is a member of the Law
Society of Alberta and the Canadian and Calgary Bar Associations. He is a two-time past co-
chair of the CBA National Canadian Corporate Counsel Conference; and served as a Director of
the Association of General Counsel of Alberta for almost a decade. He was a finalist at the 2024
ZSA Financial Post Western Canada General Counsel of the Year Awards and received a King’s
Counsel (formerly Queen’s Counsel) designation in 2015 subsequent to being named Chief
Legal Officer of the Year by Alberta Oil Magazine in 2014. In the community, Rob has coached
minor hockey in Calgary over the past 18 years; and participated in fundraising efforts
supporting caregivers for those living with Alzheimer’s and dementia related diseases, as well
as fighting against homelessness.
