Stephen’s early career included work as a documentary filmmaker in Latin America; co-owner of a jazz cafe in Vancouver, and senior executive with the BC SPCA.
He joined the McConnell Foundation in Montreal in 2003, and retired as its CEO in 2020. He has volunteered with the Victoria Forum as its Director of Regenerative Economies since 2023.
In 2022, McGill University awarded him an honorary Doctor of Laws degree in recognition of his work in philanthropy and social innovation. He is an adjunct professor at the University of Victoria’s Gustavson School of Business and a Definity Foundation Senior Fellow in Systems Innovation Finance.
