Building Trust for a Shared Future

Establishing, rebuilding and maintaining trust
Our world has encountered numerous trials and tribulations over the years, with climate change and backsliding in democratic progress representing only two of the most recent ones. The COVID pandemic drastically altered our lives, perspectives and attitudes. Confidence in public institutions fell, acceptance of restrictions for the greater good differed markedly across populations, and the spread of conspiracy theories challenged our definitions of reality. Amidst ongoing conflicts and humanitarian crises worldwide, the task of establishing, rebuilding and maintaining trust has become increasingly challenging.
Our economies are confronting significant hurdles, with high inflation, massive public debt, housing and health care crises, and aging populations. Our political systems are under increasing strain. While the majority of the world’s population goes to the polls in 2024, democracy is receding. Less than 8% of the world’s population now live in a full democracy, according to the Economist Intelligence Unit. The foundations of trust in our institutions, both local and global, are quivering.
Challenges of the digital revolution
Less than
of the world’s populaton live in a full democracy
People have unprecedented access to information, allowing them to witness global events in real-time, but do so without context or perspective. The advent of the digital revolution has brought new challenges, including the proliferation of misinformation and disinformation, that will only increase with the use of artificial intelligence and deepfake technology.
Trust is eroding at a time when it is needed most. Without trust, we cannot hope to address the myriad of challenges we are facing. Our future is a shared one and we can find opportunity in the common desire for a safe, secure and sustainable life. We may disagree on the path to get there, but the goal is universal.
