Patrick Deane is in his eighth year as Principal and Vice-Chancellor of Queen’s University. For almost a decade he was previously President and Vice-Chancellor of McMaster University. He has served the Canadian university sector more broadly in a number of other roles: as Chair of the Canadian Bureau for International Education, as Chair of the Council of Ontario Universities, and as a member of the Board of Universities Canada as well as its Research and International committees. Currently President of the Governing Council of the Magna Charta Observatory at the University of Bologna—an organization devoted to the preservation and advancement of university autonomy and academic freedom—he is also Vice-President of the International Association of Universities, based in Paris. He is a Professor of English Language and Literature with an interest in the relationship between culture and politics.
